Dust storms have drained Mars’ water for billions of years.

How has Mars lost all the water ? It is one of the oldest mysteries of the solar system, on one of its most interesting planets.

Now, thanks to NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) spacecraft, scientists have acquired more detailed information about Mars’ atmosphere, known the core of how the planet move – and they think that they have finally found the answer to the mystery.

To understand where Mars’ water went, scientists studied an area 150 kilometers from the planet’s surface.

Shane Stone is a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona and one of the authors of the new study. Studying this particular part of Mars ‘atmosphere, rather than its surface, is crucial to scientists’ new understanding of what happened to water.

“This is the area of the atmosphere transitioning from atmosphere to space. It does not transitions suddenly but is quite smooth, “Stone said.

Every planet with an atmosphere, including Earth, has this transitional space. The Earth’s transition…
