Japan’s Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s sudden resignation officially triggered a replacement within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

At a press conference on August 28, Mr. Abe announced his decision to resign while still a year in term, citing health problems related to chronic ulcerative colitis. However, he insisted that he continue to lead the government until the ruling party chooses a successor’s face.

Informed sources said that the LDP would decide how to hold a vote for the new president to replace Abe on September 1. All MPs and representatives from local institutions will likely participate in this vote.

According to Tokyo Weekender magazine, many names are mentioned as a potential candidate to succeed Mr. Abe as a Japanese prime minister.
